Does your Instagram have Purpose?

You own a business.

And you have an Instagram account.

But can you tell me why you have an Instagram account? Can you tell me what your goals are for the account? Does it have a purpose?

If I am not in the right mindset, I find scrolling through Instagram to be really overwhelming and stressful. There are so many social media experts, consultants, managers etc. on there, throwing ideas at you.

You should be doing this.

Make sure you post that.

Have you taken part in this trend?

You’re not keeping up.

Oh, everything has changed again.

Pivot.

I would describe the feeling as if I had a hundred ropes tied around me, and each post/piece of advice pulls me in a direction, only to be roughly jolted back another way. It can really take a toll on you, especially if you are already feeling overwhelmed by your business, or are lacking confidence.

But it doesn’t have to feel like this. If you feel aligned with your purpose and your WHY, for showing up on Instagram, then all of those “ropes” won’t be able to pull you around anymore. You just have to get there.

Let’s take a look at a few of these questions:

Is Instagram where most of your customers come from?

When you make sales or sign clients, hopefully, you are keeping track of where these people have come from, or how they found you. Either they are coming from your Instagram, which is great, and means you're doing something right, or they're not, and maybe they come from elsewhere. Knowing this is important when creating your content, and even more so, when planning your content.

If you find that most of your customer base comes from some other marketing venture, but you still want to have a presence on IG, then you can create a plan that reflects this.

Ready to Feel Aligned Again?

Is your target market/ideal client on Instagram?

Adding on to the previous question, it's important to know where your audience spends time on social media. It’s also important to make sure you are targeting your ideal client, and not just speaking into the void.

Take some time to remind yourself of who your ideal client is (do it the old fashioned way — pen and paper). Once you’ve done this, it will feel so much easier to reach these people in the app, because you’ll know who you’re looking for!

It’s important to note that by doing this exercise, you might realize that your ideal client isn’t actually on Instagram, and that’s okay. Now you can shift gears to a platform they are on.

Are you using Instagram to connect with people?

It's so important to remember that social media was created to be social, and when we do remember this, I find the platforms serve us best. Are you using Instagram to connect with others in your industry? How about connecting with your existing customers? Your community?

If this is a goal of your biz IG, then you will need to take the time to start building those connections and relationships by starting conversations.

I know how overwhelming it can be to run a business and market yourself on social media. Running all the socials can feel like a whole job in itself (because it kind of is). But it’s important to take the step back, breathe for a second, and figure out why you are on Instagram, what your purpose is, and to realign with it.

If you need help coming back to centre, I encourage you to book in a strategy call, and we can create alignment once again.
